Coolant FAQ for Website

What coolant do I need for my car?

Due to the huge number of applications and the increasing move to manufacturer specific coolant specifications, it is impossible to know which product is required for your car without further details about the vehicle. For this reason we do not have a "one size fits all" coolant product.

This is being driven by changes in engine technology that are a result of increasingly demanding environmental legislation. Newer, more modern engines require modern, high performance coolants. A single commodity product will no longer suffice.

Please see our interactive product finder for more details on the current antifreeze/coolant application for your vehicle.

Can I just use water in the cooling system of my car?

No. The antifreeze/coolant in your vehicle does three very important jobs:

It prevents freezing (by lowering the freezing point)
It prevents overheating (by increasing the boiling point)
It prevents corrosion within the engine (by the addition of additives)

If using water, it may seem logical that it will work as a coolant, but it will cause corrosion within the engine which will require costly repairs; it will freeze during the winter months, and boil at operating temperatures, both of which will lead to expensive engine damage. So using only water is a false economy.

The coolant in my car is red, so do I just use another red coolant?

No. It is always important that you check with the vehicle’s handbook or on the Comma website that the right type of coolant is being used. The colour DOES NOT indicate that it’s the correct type, it is a dye added during the manufacturing of the liquid so you can visually see it (for example when checking the level in the expansion tank). A coloured coolant will also aid in identifying where a leak may be occurring.
